Piggy-back burials
Friday 9 May, 2008 12:01am
Fearing a major shortfall in burial plots over the next 15 years in the greater metropolitan area including the Central Coast the government has listed 19 options for discussion and comment.
They say there will be a shortfall of about 245,000 plots by 2020 in Sydney and surrounding areas and that needed to be planned for.
Gosford Council operates two cemeteries at Point Clare and Wamberal while Wyong Council operates five at Noraville, Jilliby, Yarramalong (two) and Fountaindale.
The warning has come as Gosford Council considers plans to extend the viability of both Wamberal and Point Clare cemeteries. It has compulsorily acquired three blocks of crown land next to the Central Coast Highway to expand Wamberal Cemetery.
Last month Gosford Council cemetery officer Maureen Rowett said the plan included provision of new burial plots.
Among the controversial options the State Government has suggested is the introduction of a lift and deepen method where previous burials are reboxed and buried deeper in the grave.
Another is a tenure system in which plots can be sold if the existing tenure is not renewed by a family member.
The government document says this system is used in some Australian states and across Europe.
Submissions on the controversial options will be received up until June 30.
