One-way traffic 'the best option'
Wednesday 7 May, 2008 12:01am
The road was opened at lunch time on Thursday.
City services director Stephen Glen said the council and the RTA decided to open the road downhill only because it would have the most benefit for traffic.
"The council and the RTA were concerned that afternoon traffic was queuing excessively on the F3 at both Kariong and Ourimbah as a result of the closure," he said.
"While the morning peak is experiencing delays it is manageable, however the afternoon peak was experiencing significant delays."
Downhill was the preferred option because traffic would have to be stopped for five minutes in both directions to clear the lane each time it was to change direction.
"This would result in dangerous queue lengths around the bends and surrounding roads," he said.
"The downhill direction will also allow Horsfield Bay and Phegans Bay residents to reach appointments on the Peninsula," he said. Residents who cannot travel up Woy Woy Rd have been asked to plan for extra travel time around Brisbane Water Drive.
"We would like to thank the community for their continued patience and apologise for inconvenience caused," Mr Glen said.
